The experiences I have gained from fields has become a great experience for me ,this is due to the fact the general subject was displayed in a fashion where the subject became interesting and informative. The ways this field was interesting was due to the brief itself ,which was to produce a product using the Arduino that’s users can interact with . The brief itself was a broad and open allowing freedom in the design and making of the product ,I personally thought this worked well because we were able to experiment with multiple of components and not being restricted. The field itself has taught me a lot in terms of how a circuit works and how to read coding to an extent where if given a piece of coding I have personally not written I can understand the language .The whole experience was most effective when we were put into groups becuase I personally was able to gain some teamwork experience as well as taking a leadership role allowed me to gain confidents and had found that the team worked more efficiently with some structure. Also when we were producing ideas for the final designs we were able to gain outside knowledge into the ideas becuase of the mixture of different subjects in the groups ,this created a more creative and well thought out final idea. The final idea ended up as an interactive glove which uses LDR sensors to react to the users finger movement ,we as a group felt this related to the brief very well becuase we used movement as the main reactions that will activate the sensors creating a relationship between user and product. One factor I would change however if I were to do the project agian would be to leave more time for the production stage so the final outcome would have become more aesthetically pleasing .The only thing I would change about the field would be to incorporate the Arduino more earlier than later so we gain more experience and gain more time to experiment. In conclusion I felt that this field had become very useful in terms of relating what I have learnt to my subject and I can defiantly see myself using what I have learnt in class to my subject areas .
Field 2 : Are You Sitting Comfortably ?
The start of this project began with a simple brief ,that required us to produce a chair that was for specific target market .The target market that we had to produce a chair for was none other than our local tutors ,this allowed us to gain one to one primary research through a questionnaire provided by Richard .I personally thought that this process of receiving research on the design was very effective because the information gained was legit and became a necessary aspect for the final design. This method of gaining primary research had proven very effective in the final design because the original ideas that I had personally produced would not appeal to the target market I was given .Also with having a second opinion on the task at hand allowed me to produce ideas that would incorporate the clients interest and hobbies which created new forms and ideas to the design stage .In class we were given several different task that allowed us to gain an inside to how to produce the chair design ,these task involved us using welding wire as a modelling tool to produce the line shapes of the chairs as well as using model board to create the planes of the chair designs . Both of these tasks helped with the final production of the chair because they gave us an idea of the form and scale needed for the design itself. One other aspect that the project required us to do was to create a working model ,this became very challenging to myself due to the fact I lack a lot of the skills needed to produce the best chair outcome .However with the use of the Fab Lab had become a huge asset because it allowed me to expand my abilities to more technical ways of producing product by allowing me to use the CNC machine and laser cutter .The reason why this helped was because the machines ability to be able to cut certain shapes precisely allowing me to create more advance design .On the other hand I felt that some designs we wanted to produce ended up being very restricted due to the fact that we were restricted by the amount of materials we could use and the need to use secondary materials became a necessary because the scale of the design would have been much smaller than originally thought of. Several aspects I would change with the project if I were to repeat the task is that I would have spent more time in the making process so that the final outcome of the product is at a better standard as well as spending more time on the design itself ,ensuring that the chair design appeals to the target market and functions properly. However I felt that the product was very successful and the final outcome was to a reasonable standard and the skills I have learnt from this project will become very useful in my future subject projects.
Testing out different methods of creating chairs designs using welding wire ,this had allowed us to produce chair designs which only use line base in order to get a better idea on how to create the best structure for the chair design. Most of the ideas shown was trying to recreate already made chairs so gaining an better understanding to how the frame works .One factors in which seemed to be the constant is that the structure is most sturdy when the whole piece is created in one wire .
After experimenting with the line bases I then moved on experimenting with planes and this allowed me to research different kinds of joints and hinges that will help secure the chair in the best way . A certain factor in which I had to keep in mind when designing the chair was the thickness of the material and must be considered the most important measurement because if not there will be many difficulties .
Introducing this terms subject through the brief of us needing to produce a fully functioning chair for a specific target which we will have to interview using 20 specially selected questions to identify the aesthetics and function in which the chair will have as a feature .
Before starting any designing process we had to find the ergonomics and anthropometrics of different chairs in order to get a clear idea with the ratio and size we will use. This required us to split up in pairs and find different measurements for different chairs and we’ll as recording the measurements on how both partners interact with the chair .This information is then compared with another group because we can gain the medium of the measurements to gain more of a average size in which our chairs will be .
